Jonesboro Lawmaker to Head Joint Budget Committee

NOVEMBER 13, 2006 - Posted at 11:17 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Jonesboro legislator Chris Thyer (D), the District 74 Representative in the Arkansas House of Representatives, was elected Friday by his peers as House Chair of the Joint Budget Committee for the next session of the General Assembly.

Thyer, Craighead County's senior member of the Legislature, will become the county's first chair of the Legislature's most powerful committee in at least four decades.  "They tell me it's been at least that long," said Thyer.  "We don't actually know when the last time a Craighead County House member chaired it.  It's really an honor."

The Joint Budget Committee is made up of leadership from both the House and Senate, and accounts for every dollar of state revenue, both generated and spent.  All eyes are the Legislature this session following a robust surplus.  It is estimated that there will be close to $1 billion in revenue above the base budget, made up of $800 million in budget surplus combined with an estimated $200 million in new revenue growth.  The state's total budget is expected to top $12 billion for fiscal 2007.

In April, Williams Baptist cross country runner Alex Van Herpen competed in the prestigious Boston Marathon. An incredible feat. Learning about his path to get there, it stopped me in my tracks. Five years ago Alex was bound to a wheelchair. in January of 2011, he was diagnosed with strep throat, the flu and mono all within a two week period. For five months Alex was bound to a wheel chair. One day he just got up and walked. Medical experts had no explanation for any of it.  ...
