BULL SHOALS, AR - State environmental officials say an estimated 50,000 gallons of sewage was deliberately set loose into the White River. Police say a lift pump was shut down by a vandal and the alarm that would have notified city employees was also disabled.
No arrests have been made but Bull Shoals Police Chief Mike Armstrong says he is investigating.
The spill was last Friday. A golf course owner noticed the waste spilling out of a manhole and called the city. The waste was draining into a culvert that empties into the white river.
The state Department of Environmental Quality says the city of Bull Shoals won't be cited because the spill was an act of sabotage. But the attorney says the city is responsible for its system and the city would be cited if a similar spill occurs in the future.
