LITTLE ROCK, AR - Lawmakers today questioned outgoing Governor Huckabee's recommendation to continue for another two years a three-cent excise tax on beer for early childhood education programs.
Legislators ignored Huckabee's recommendation and sent the public school fund budget to a subcommittee at base level and said they would wait for recommendations from Governor-elect Mike Beebe.
The tax has been extended every two years since 2001 and is set to expire on June 30, 2007. State Department of Education officials had not recommended continuing the tax.
Senator Percy Malone of Arkadelphia says the tax was a temporary one and that the Legislature should honor its word.
