Delaplaine School Closes

PARAGOULD, Ark. (AP) _ Greene County Tech Superintendent Sheila
Ford says that as Arkansas has raised its education standards, it
has become impossible to keep the small school of Delaplaine open.
Delaplaine was one of many isolated school districts with
enrollments of fewer than 350 students that had to merge with
another district under new state laws. Delaplaine merged with
Greene County Tech in 2004 but enrollment continued to decline at
the school, and the Greene County Tech School Board voted to close
the small school.

Ford said that knowing that the district wasn't able to provide
a quality education for the students, it just wasn't fair to keep
the school open. Delaplaine's 245 students will have to decide
where to go to school next fall. The superintendent said the
district would love to have them and she said that displaced
teachers and staff will have a job at the Tech campus, if they want
it.
