Prosecutor Says Fatal Shooting of Region 8 Teen May Have Been Accidental

NOVEMBER 28, 2006 - Posted at 7:30 a.m. CST

JUDSONIA, AR - A prosecutor says the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy in Batesville may have been accidental.

Ryan Grothe of Judsonia died after being shot in the abdomen last Wednesday.  The boy was shot by another teenager during a basketball game.

Two of the boys playing basketball apparently used the nine-millimeter handgun for target practice earlier.

Prosecutor Chris Raff says it appears the juveniles thought the pistol was unloaded.

Raff says the clip was out of the gun but a bullet was still in the chamber.

Raff is to decide whether to file charges after he receives the sheriff's office investigative file.
