Teen Sentenced to 40 Years for Setting Blaze that Killed West Memphis Boy

NOVEMBER 28, 2006 - Posted at 7:47 a.m. CST

WEST MEMPHIS, AR - A teenager in Crittenden County has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, burglary and arson in the 2005 death of a 15-year-old in a fire.

Keltric Gilmer, 19, was sentenced last week to 40 years in prison for setting the fire that killed James "Nick" Wilson of West Memphis.

Police say Gilmer broke into the apartment and started two fires in the kitchen, using paper and a lighter.

West Memphis Assistant Police Chief Mike Allen says Gilmer initially fled, but returned when he saw the fire raging.  Gilmer then apparently warned other residents in the apartment complex of the blaze.

Allen says Gilmer confessed, but said the teenager did not think anyone was in the apartment when he set the fires.
