FAYETTEVILLE, AR - An economist with the University of Arkansas says the overall state economy is flat.

Billy Collins gave his quarterly business analysis yesterday in Fayetteville.  Collins says that even with growth in the economy in northwest Arkansas, the state as a whole is not showing any significant economic gains.

Collins says the state has gotten "hammered" when it comes to manufacturing jobs.  He pointed out Fort Smith, where Whirlpool is scaling back its operation, and said those job cuts will ripple through the community.

In the span of a year, the state lost nearly 5,000 manufacturing jobs.
