Highway Departments Get Ready for Wintery Weather

Nov. 30, 2006 - Posted at 12:30 p.m. CST

Jonesboro, AR -- With the chance of icy weather tonight, road crews are making preparations for clearing the roadways.

Joe Barnett, District Engineer for the Arkansas Highway Department says they have been watching the weather closely and are ready for what ever winter brings.

"In a situation like this, when you don't knowhow much you will get, if you get anything at all, you have to be ready. We just anticipate the worst that way no matter what you get you are ready. But it takes time to salt the roads, and we do it as quick as we can."

But when you are trying to get to work and the roads are icy, it's hard to be patient.

"We do everything we can. Of course we have to have priorities when salting the roads. We have to do the high volume areas first and then we can get the more rural locations as soon as we can."

Barnett asks that you use their website, www.arkansashighways.com , to find out what roads are clear and what conditions are ahead.

"Everyone just needs to be cautious. Leave earlier, drive slower, and be careful."
