80 Groups Vying for FEMA Mobile Homes Stored at Hope

DECEMBER 4, 2006 - Posted at 7:55 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The state prison system's request for 29 of the mobile homes and travel trailers stockpiled by the Federal Emergency Management Agency is the largest so far of the 80 applications from nonprofits and government agencies in Arkansas.  About 8,300 of the homes are stored at the Hope Airport, while another 1,100 are at the Red River Army Depot in east Texas near Texarkana.

FEMA has not said how or when it will give out the mobile homes.  But the agency that distributes federal surplus property in Arkansas sent a survey to 3,600 government officials and nonprofit employees recently to see who may be interested in the mobile homes.

So far, groups have requested about 160 mobile homes and 100 travel trailers.
