Small Shops Have Big Business During Holiday Season

JONESBORO, AR -- As holiday shoppers search for the best bargains this year, many businesses are vying to get customers in the door.  Region 8 has many large scale retailers, but how does the small business owner compare when it comes to the holiday hustle and bustle?

The bells are ringing at the Arkansas Sorts Fan this Christmas season...with shoppers hunting for Darren McFadden & Marcus Monk jerseys and anything that proclaims the cardinals World Series champs.

"Unique items and then also our customer service.  We're able to go above and beyond what some of the bigger stores are.  We do special orders, we also still do layaway, which a lot of places...that's hard to find in this day and age," said Arkansas Sports Fan owner Linda Robinson.

Overflow and extra foot traffic from the Mall at Turtle Creek has helped build cliental at the little store and their three main products all have strong selling points.

"The Cardinals winning the World Series didn't hurt by any means and then the Razorbacks going to a bowl game, that's fabulous.  And then with NASCAR, there's always a winner, so that's always good," said Robinson.

Smaller stores can be less stressful for shoppers then crowded retailers.

"They can take their time, they can get in and out very quickly and they can just walk through the store and they are not hurried and they know that they can get waited on very quickly," said Lisa Davis of Enhancements.

And Davis says it's the personal touches that make a difference.

"We offer free gift wrap for our customers so they won't have to waste their time going home and we do that here.  We try to do that special," said Davis.

And for on-line shoppers...the deadline is nearing to get your holiday shopping done for on-time delivery.  There is about a week left to surf and buy before shipping guarantees start disappearing.
