Talent Bids Senate Farewell

DECEMBER 8, 2006 - Posted at 8:15 a.m. CST

WASHINGTON - Senator Jim Talent didn't waste much time in his final floor speech on fond recollections or bitter-sweet memories of his four years in the Senate.

The Missouri Republican delivered a weighty, half-hour address urging Congress to boost military spending.

Talent warns that the current military is not strong enough because of cuts driven by budgetary rather than military needs.  He says the struggle for peace and democracy in the world depends on the reality and perception of American power.

Talent lost the Senate race last month to Democrat Claire McCaskill.  She takes office on January 4.
