Public School Groups Oppose Education Board Nominee

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Some Missouri public school groups are opposing Governor Blunt's latest appointment to the State Board of Education.

Blunt in October named Donayle Whitmore-Smith of St. Louis to the state board. She runs School Choice Missouri and has advocated for efforts to help children attend private schools.

A spokesman for the Missouri School Boards' Association says Whitmore-Smith has a history of supporting issues that undermine public schools.

Blunt spokesman Brian Hauswirth says the governor believes bureaucrats are attacking Whitmore-Smith's integrity. Hauswirth says she has publicly supported vouchers, but she also understands the importance of public schools.

Whitmore-Smith must be confirmed by the Senate after it returns next month.
