Teenager Charged in November Shooting Death of Batesville Boy

DECEMBER 14, 2006 - Posted at 3:54 p.m. CST

SEARCY, AR - A 16-year-old boy was charged today with negligent homicide in the shooting death of a 13-year-old Batesville boy in November.

Prosecutor Chris Ratliff says the teenager's case would be heard in juvenile court.  Raff declined to identify the boy or his hometown.

The boy is accused of shooting 13-year-old Ryan Grothe with a nine-millimeter handgun on November 22 during a basketball game in Judsonia.  Raff has said two of the boys at the game used the gun for target practice earlier.

Raff says the clip was out of the gun, but a bullet remained in the chamber.  The bullet struck Grothe in the abdomen.
