SeMo Teen Gets Six Months in Jail for Prosthetic Leg Attack

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO - A southeast Missouri teenager will spend six months in jail for attacking a disabled teen, perhaps using the man's prosthetic leg as a weapon.

Alexander Harris, 17, of Cape Girardeau, pleaded guilty yesterday to misdemeanor assault.

The 18-year-old victim was born with half his right arm and right leg missing.

Prosecutors had originally charged with Harris with a hate crime.  One factor that led to the downgraded charge was a change in the victim's story.  He originally said he was struck in the face and lost consciousness, only to awaken to find he was being beaten with the prosthetic leg.

But in a preliminary hearing, the victim remembered the prosthetic leg becoming dislodged but offered no testimony about being struck with it.
