House Democrats Propose Nonpartisan Redistricting Plan

JANUARY 8, 2007 - Posted at 3:56 p.m. CST

JEFFERSON CITY, MO - House Democrats unveiled a proposal they say would remove political considerations from drawing of legislative districts.

House member Rachel Storch, of St. Louis, says districts too often are created to protect incumbents and political interests.  She says gerrymandering invites political polarization.

But Missouri Republican Party spokesman Paul Sloca says the Democrats controlled the governor's office and the Legislature when legislative districts were last redrawn in 2000, but didn't propose their plan then.

House Democrats also called for plans to bar lawmakers from working as lobbyists and prevent political appointees from giving money while in office.
