Grandfather of Westside Shooter Dies

JANUARY 10, 2007 - Posted at 10:56 a.m. CST

BONO, AR - Douglas Golden, 70, the grandfather of the younger of two juveniles guilty of killing four students and a teacher at Westside Middle School in March of 1998, died Monday at his home near Bono.

The death is believed to be related to natural causes.  Golden was the grandfather of Andrew Golden, the then 11-year-old Westside Middle School student who, along with schoolmate Mitchell Johnson, stole a large cache of guns and ammunition from a locked gun cabinet inside the elder Golden's home before going on a killing spree at their school.

Mitchell Johnson was released from the custody of federal authorities upon his 21st birthday in 2005.  Andrew Golden is set to be released later this year, when he turns 21.
