Shoffner Fires Four Employees in Treasurer's Office, Including Wingfield's Daughters

JANUARY 10, 2007 - Posted at 4:05 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - One of Martha Shoffner's first moves as newly sworn-in state treasurer was to fire her predecessor's two daughters from the office.

Shoffner, who took the oath of office yesterday, says she fired four employees, including the daughters of former treasurer Gus Wingfield.

Shoffner said Tuesday that she fired Valerie Wallace, who was paid $78,915 per year as chief operating officer, and Margaret Gutierrez, who was paid $57,968 per year as a treasurer assistant.

In 2004, Wingfield was reprimanded and fined $750 by the Arkansas Ethics Commission after his decision to promote and pay higher salaries to his daughters.

Shoffner says she hired four employees, including former Representative Mike Creekmore as a legislative liason.
