Emerson Joins Democrats on Stem Cell Bill

CAPITOL HILL - Republican Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson joined Missouri's four Democrats in voting for a U.S. House bill to increase federal support for embryonic stem cell research.

The other four Republicans in Missouri's House delegation voted against the bill, which passed on a 253-to-174 vote.

President Bush has promised to veto it.

The research typically involves the destruction of frozen embryos created in vitro fertilization.

It's opposed by anti-abortion lawmakers and supporters who believe their taxes should not pay for such research.

Proponents say it's done on embryos that would otherwise by discarded from fertility clinics anyway.
