Committee Advances Measure to Replenish Governor's Emergency Fund

JANUARY 23, 2007 - Posted at 3:55 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Joint Budget Committee has advanced a bill that would provide $500,000 for the governor's emergency fund.  Governor Beebe requested the money, which would be for the rest of the fiscal year, because his predecessor, Mike Huckabee, had depleted the fund before leaving office.

Huckabee used some of the money to destroy hard drives from his office.  He also used emergency funds to provide money to Little Rock to aid the Mexican consulate, to a Hot Springs film institute and to a program to purchase musical instruments for donation to students.

Senator Jim Jeffries, a Democrat from Crossett, says he wants the legislature to take a closer look at how the fund is used and whether the proper steps are being followed.
