A Virginia law forbids free blacks to hold public office or to be witnesses in court cases.

44 black slaves and 30 white colonists are killed in Stono rebellion near Charleston, SC.

Crispus Attucks is killed by British soldiers in the Boston Massacre.

Jean-Baptist-Point Du Sable builds a trading post on the Chicago River at Lake Michigan. The settlement would later become the city of Chicago.

The royal governor of Virginia, Lord Dunmore issues a proclamation declaring those slaves free who join his majesty's troops.

1776
Reversing earlier policy, George Washington enlists free blacks in the Continental Army. during the Revolutionary War an estimated 9,000 free and enslaved blacks served in the colonial war effort. An estimated 50,000 slaves escape to join the British; some fight against the Americans.

The Declaration of Independence is adopted by the Continental Congress after references condemning slavery have been removed.
