Lt. Governor Pushing for State Lottery

JANUARY 31, 2007 - Posted at 3:46 p.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Lieutenant Governor Bill Halter wants Arkansas voters in 2008 to decide whether to start a statewide lottery system.  Halter says a state lottery could raise millions of dollars for college scholarships and teacher bonuses.

Standing with 14 state representatives at a press conference today, Halter called for a statewide lottery to provide the dollars needed for Arkansas students to attend two-and-four-year colleges and vocational schools.  And though the state has traditionally been leery of gambling and lotteries in the past, Halter said now is the time to support one.

Halter says legislation will be filed in the House to bring the issue before voters.
