Clinton at Stepfather's Side for Final Hours

FEBRUARY 2, 2007 - Posted at 7:55 a.m. CST

HOT SPRINGS, AR - Former President Bill Clinton was among those at Dick Kelley's bedside when Clinton's stepfather passed away.

The 91-year-old Kelley died Wednesday at the home on the banks of Lake Hamilton that he had shared with Clinton's mother, Virginia Kelley, until she died in 1994.

Clay Farrar, a lawyer married to Kathy Farrar, Kelley's daughter from his first marriage, said Kelley was diagnosed with colon cancer three years ago.  Farrar says Kelley also developed liver cancer.

Clinton and his daughter, Chelsea, flew into Hot Springs on Monday and spent four hours with Kelley before returning to New York that night.  Farrar says Clinton returned Tuesday and stayed with his stepfather from about 5 p.m. until his death about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday.  Farrar says Clinton was with Kelley "continuously and, for all practical purposes, without sleep."

The family has scheduled a reception in Kelley's remembrance at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hot Springs Convention Center, to which the public is invited.  The wake will follow a private burial that will take place after a 2 p.m. funeral service.

Memorials may be made to the Clinton Presidential Foundation in Little Rock or the St. Joseph Mercy Cancer Center in Hot Springs.
