SeMo Mayor Resigns Over Nepotism Allegation

FEBRUARY 6, 2007 - Posted at 4:05 p.m. CST

DELTA, MO - The mayor of the southeast Missouri town of Delta (Cape Girardeau County)  resigns after admitting that she violated the Missouri Constitution's ban on nepotism.

Last year, Mayor Carol Collins appointed her brother-in-law, Dale Hobeck, to the Board of Aldermen.  She announced her resignation last night at a meeting of the board.

Hobeck retains his seat and is on the April 3 ballot seeking to serve out the remainder of a two-year term.

Board members will choose a replacement for Collins at a special meeting February 19.  At that meeting, members will also choose a replacement for Alderman Ricky Cobb.

Cobb is a convicted felon.  He resigned from the board and withdrew as a candidate after learing about a state law in effect since January 1 barring felons from seeking office.
