Bill's Sponsor Says He Wants to Repeal 'Duty to Retreat' in Self-Defense Law

FEBRUARY 7, 2007 - Posted at 7:37 a.m. CST

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The sponsor of a bill in the Legislature to broaden circumstances where it's legal to use deadly force in self-defense will be amended.  But state Representative Mike Burris of Malvern says he still plans to include elimination of a "duty to retreat" before using force that could kill.

Burris pulled down his bill on use of deadly force in self-defense after it was attacked yesterday before the House Judiciary Committee.  Prosecutors said it would be a big benefit to criminal defendants, and Burris said he would amend it to address some of their concerns.

But he said he did not plan the change the removal of the "duty to retreat."
