CHERRY VALLEY, AR - Recently turning 81, Cherry Valley resident Carl Lace looks back on his many years of service in the Peace Corps as one of the most interesting times of his life.
Lace spent time in a number of countries, including the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico and Africa. He volunteered off and on for 15 years.
The northeast Arkansas man remembers arriving in Mali in west Africa to work in a village of cannibals. He says he asked another volunteer who was leaving who the villagers eat and she said "strangers." Lace says the villagers accepted him, though, and actually became protective of him.
