Jo Ann Emerson Sticks to Party Lines on Iraq Resolution

WASHINGTON - After a week of debates, Missouri's nine members of Congress are following along party lines, with Democrats planning to vote for a House resolution disapproving a troop increase in Iraq and Republicans coming out against it.

Representative Jo Ann Emerson of Cape Girardeau was among the more conflicted lawmakers.  The Republican came close to backing the measure before deciding yesterday that she could not.

Emerson says she was concerned that the vote was taking place after additional troops already began heading to Iraq.

She also is frustrated Republicans were not allowed to offer their own version.

Nearly every Democrat is expected to vote for the resolution.  Most Republicans are opposing it, although at least 20 G.O.P. lawmakers are expected to cross party lines to back the measure.
