Batesville School Hopes to Get More Students to Enroll in College

FEBRUARY 19, 2007 - Posted at 7:27 a.m. CST

BATESVILLE, AR - Students at Southside High School near Batesville will have the inside track when they apply to college, at least where dealing with paperwork is concerned.  Southside and the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville have joined forces in the hope of getting more students to attend college.

Staff members at the community college are helping students get ready for college, even if it's at another school.  Officials say the goal is to encourage students to pursue higher education, regardless of the campus.

Arkansas ranks 49th in the country in terms of the percentage of adults with bachelor's degrees.  Only West Virginia has a lower percentage, according to 2000 U.S. Census data.

The 95 Seniors in the Southside class of 2007 have worked with staff members from the community college to fill out applications and financial aid documents.  The community college also pays fees for its applications and a college placement exam.
