LITTLE ROCK, AR - A proposal to require the state Education Board and school boards around the state to include students among their members failed today before a House panel. Legislators questioned how effective the measure would be.
The House Education Committee, on a voice vote, rejected the proposal by Representative Betty Pickett, a Democrat from Conway, that would have required school boards and the state Education Dept. to include at least one non-voting student member.
Under Pickett's proposal, the student member would have been selected by faculty from schools and would not be able to participate in executive sessions of the boards.
