Good Neighbors Collect Cell Phones for Soldiers

March 2, 2007 -- Posted at 10:06 p.m. CST

JONESBORO, AR -- Soldiers with the 875th Engineer Battalion have been in Iraq since July.  In that time families have racked up thousands of long distance minutes talking with their loved ones.

Fortunately, Liberty Tax Service is helping out by collecting cell phones for soldiers.

Cell phones are being collected at their location in Paragould.

"The old cell phones are sold back to cell phone companies and the money is then taken and used to buy phone cards for soldiers overseas," said Chris Robinson, owner of Liberty Tax Service.

Mendy Thomas's husband is currently serving in Iraq with the 875th Engineer Battalion, she and her three children look forward to hearing from dad.

"It can make you feel so much better after a hard week because you can tell that they're ok," said Thomas.

Thomas usually talks to her husband over the internet, but says nothing is as good as hearing his voice.  In the past seven months she has bought several international calling cards.

"There have been a couple months that we've spent $150 on sending calling cards," said Thomas.

There are already about 20 or more cell phones in the collection box at Liberty Tax Service, but more are needed.

"Each phone can account for 100 minutes.  You can see how 100 minutes could really add up in saving them money," said Robinson.

I-pods, mp3 players, and old toner cartridges are also being collected.  Robinson also stresses that the cell phones can be in any condition.  The phone does not have to work or be in its original packaging.

Cell phones will be collected through April 17th.
