LITTLE ROCK, AR - Governor Beebe is expected to ask the Joint Budget Committee this week to appropriate $456 million from the state's surplus to pay for a program to repair school buildings.
Much of the rest of the legislative package dealing with schools, a big issue before the General Assembly this year, was dealt with last week. Beebe plans to sign into law two bills approved by legislators that will increase the per-student funding that schools receive from the state by $214. Beebe has already signed into law a $5.1 billion budget for public schools.
Senator Shane Broadway of Bryant, who has speaheaded a program to repair school facilities around the state, said the price tag on the job that was received last week was the last piece of the puzzle. So now legislators can deal with Beebe's school-facilities request for money from the state's budget surplus.
