Bill to Authorize Ballot Item for Highway Bonds

MARCH 12, 2007 - Posted at 3:04 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Senate Transportation Committee today advanced a bill that would allow for a ballot item for highway bonds.

Voters would decide whether to give the state Highway Commission the power to issue up to $575 million in bonds.  The bill has the support of all 35 senators and the governor.

Sponsored by Senator Bobby Glover, a Democrat from Carlisle, the bill would seek the same amount as a failed 2005 special election with one important difference.  Glover's proposal calls for the commission's bond authority to expire at the end of 2013, while the 2005 measure would have run indefinitely.
