Highway Bond Authority Proposal Heads to Governor

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A bill allowing Governor Beebe to put a $575 million highway bond package before voters is heading to the governor's desk.  The Arkansas Senate voted 35-to-0 to agree with a House amendment to the bill.  The proposal by Democratic Senator Bobby Glover of Carlisle seeks the same amount as a failed 2005 special bond measure, but the current proposal has an expiration date.  If approved by voters, the measure would give the state Highway Commission the bonding authority through December 31, 2013.

Glover and others say the expiration date will make it more likely that voters will approve the proposal.  Beebe has said that he would support a bond package if it gained widespread support in the Legislature.
