Fire Destroys Fred's Dollar Store

PIGGOTT, AR -- An overnight fire in Piggott destroys the Fred's Dollar Store.  Fred's was one of the only store's in the town that supplied just about everything.

"Flames were probably twice the size of the building.  I came and checked on my business to make sure it was all right," said Jamey Parks.

Overnight storms didn't help the firefighters.  The cause of the fire is unknown but arson is not suspected.

"It looked like it was generalized in the storage area where all the electric boxes and stuff are," said Parks.

The business closed around 8 o'clock Tuesday night and the fire was reported around 10 o'clock.

The wind was blowing very hard keeping the fire going.  Embers from the fire blew several blocks down the street even catching the roof of another building on fire.

"It was a pretty good place to come and get stuff and convenient for everyone here in town," said Parks.

Piggott has one grocery store, but a lot of people shopped at Fred's.

"It's going to be a major loss.  It was not only people's jobs but a lot of business come in here," said Billy Alstadt, Piggott Chief of Police.

About 10 to 12 people worked at Fred's.  The building will remain untouched until insurance agents come to look at the damage.

Representatives from Fred's corporate office came down on Wednesday morning.

"I've talked to some representatives from Fred's and they say they're going to put it back, so it will be a temporary loss," said business owner Jim Parks.

No one was inside at the time of the fire. One firefighter was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
