Jonesboro Agrees to Buy New Tornado Sirens

JONESBORO, AR - About the same time a possible tornado was slamming the city's industrial park, the Jonesboro City Council agreed to buy some new tornado warning sirens.

The city is to buy three sirens to replace ones that no longer work.  The purchase price is $48,750.

Council members asked why the city didn't keep extra sirens in reserve.  Mayor Doug Formon says the city's sirens are 30 years old and replacement parts are no longer available.

The city has 28 sirens, and the council instructed the staff to study which areas of the city aren't reached by the existing set-up.
