Grand Jury Indicts former Region 8 Teacher on Sex Charges

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A federal grand jury has indicted a former Melbourne teacher, accusing him of taking students across state lines to engage in sexual acts.  Acting U.S. Attorney Tim Griffin said in a news release yesterday that 32-year-old Steven Mitchell of Pineville was indicted on 12 counts involving sexual misconduct with students.

Griffin said Mitchell is accused of abusing students on out-of-state field trips.  The crimes are punishable by up to 15 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000.

Mitchell has already been charged in Izard County Circuit Court for soliciting male students for sex and indecent exposure.

Mitchell is scheduled to be arraigned on the federal charges on April 26 before U.S. Magistrate Judge John F. Forster, Jr.
