News Conference Planned Today at State's National Guard Headquarters

NORTH LITTLE ROCK - Officials of the Arkansas National Guard say the guard's 39th Infantry Brigade will be the topic of a news conference today at guard headquarters at Camp Robinson in North Little Rock.

They're not saying what the announcement is about. But Pentagon officials said last week that National Guard soldiers in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Indiana and an unnamed state would be notified soon that they could be deployed to Iraq about the first of the year.

The 39th has already been sent to Iraq once. The 3,400 members of the 39th were mobilized for 18 months, a year of which was spent in Iraq, mainly in 2004. Some members of the unit also were deployed to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and later to support U.S. border patrols.
