Virtual Academy Gets Charter Renewal

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Renewal of the charter for the Arkansas Virtual Academy for another five years has been approved by the state Education Board.

A 2005 law had barred the state from providing any money to the operation, which is currently funded by a federal grant. But the Education Department's appropriation passed by the Legislature last week includes language that allows the state to fund an open-enrollment virtual charter school.

The renewal approved yesterday limits the number of students to 300.
