7-Year-Old Boys Dies after Fall from Carnival Ride

HOPE, Ark. (AP) - Hope police say a seven-year-old boy is dead after he and his mother fell from a carnival ride. The accident occurred Sunday, and the boy died at a Little Rock hospital Monday night. Police say the ride won't be used again until inspectors for the state Labor Department's Amusement Ride Division say it is safe.

After Mariscal Alvarado and his mother fell from the Sizzler ride, they were taken to a local hospital, and the boy was later transferred to Arkansas Children's Hospital at Little Rock.

The operator of the ride, Dewayne Mathis of Hope, said the accident occurred about a minute into the Sizzler's ride sequence. He said that, after the two fell from the car they were riding in, they were struck by other cars of the ride before it came to a halt. He said that, though the motor driving the ride had been shut down, momentum kept the machinery moving.
