Stalled Train Interrupts Morning Commute in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, AR - The morning commute to work and school was interupted this morning for many Jonesboro motorists and Arkansas State University students and staffers.

At approximately 7 a.m., a Burlington Northern-Santa Fe freight's engined failed while the train was at the north Caraway Road crossing near the ASU campus.  University police drove the engine's crew to the Jonesboro freightyard, where they picked up another engine to replace stalled, so the train could be moved. "From what the engineer said, it just quit on them and they had to go pick up another one," said UPD officer Raymond Mansker.

Motorists, meanwhile, had to find an alternative route while the crossing was blocked for more than an hour.  The crossing was finally cleared at about 8:15 a.m.
