Senate Endorses Biodiesel Mandate

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - First, lawmakers mandate ethanol be mixed in gasoline. Now, the Senate has voted to require biodiesel be blended with diesel fuel.

Biodiesel is a product generally made from soybean oil.

Legislation given initial Senate approval today would require a five percent biodiesel blend to be sold at all gas stations beginning in April 2009.

That mirrors an existing law, which will require a ten percent ethanol blend to be sold at gas stations beginning next January.

In both cases, the mandate would not apply whenever the price of ethanol or biodiesel fuel is more expensive than traditional fuel.
