MAGNOLIA, Ark. (AP) - Authorities in Magnolia say a 12-year-old girl was killed when a gun handled by her 11-year-old cousin discharged.
Shavalee Smith was killed on Sunday morning at the cousin's house in Magnolia. Police Chief Robert Gorum says the shooting is a tragedy and that the boy didn't mean to shoot the girl.
The boy was not named by police because of his age.
Prosecutors will review the case.
Gorum says the boy had taken the gun from a relative's vehicle a couple of days before. The children were sitting on a couch at about 8:45 a.m., before adults in the house were awake, and the boy was showing the girl the gun when it fired. The bullet entered Shavalee's right side and exited her left. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.
