Arson Suspected in South Memphis Fires

MEMPHIS, TN - Investigators suspect arson is behind a house fire yesterday that spread to five other buildings in Memphis.

Two firefighters were slightly injured in the blaze.

The Memphis Fire Department said several of the structures were vacant, but one was an apartment building.

Authorities said the fire started in one of the vacant buildings just before 4 a.m. and spread to the others on a parallel street.

A woman who lived in one of the houses got out safely after neighbors pounded on her door to alert her to the flames.

The area is several blocks south of the city's downtown district.
