2007 Earth Day

JONESBORO-It's been nearly 40 years since the first official earth day. It was started by environmental activist and Senator, Gaylord Nelson. He started a grassroots campaign to protest environmental abuse and that became an annual tradition.

On that first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 there wasn't a lot of care given to the environment. As awareness grew, so did the clean up efforts. The environmental protection agency was formed and acts like the endangered species act were developed because of earth day and its supporters. There are many things you can do this weekend.

"There's all kinds of things you can do, especially with the kids," says K8 Chief Meteorologist Ryan Vaughan.  "Like plant trees or go out to the park and pick up trash pr even pick up trash on your own street. You can also do some things to save money, like replacing those regular bulbs with fluorescent ones that'll save you a ton of money, especially over several years."

You can take small steps that will help all of us out. Maybe even think about reading your children Dr. Seuss's classic book, The Lorax.
