COTTER- Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says two people are dead after a small airplane crashed at an airstrip near the White River in northern Arkansas.

The sheriff said Doug Beechel and Sharon Beechel of nearby Whiteville were killed when their single-engine plane went down about 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

The ages of the couple who died in the crash could not be learned this evening. Montgomery said witnesses reported that the plane was going in for a landing when it crashed between the private airstrip, called Valley Airfield, and a road that passes alongside the airport property.

The plane struck a power line and crashed beside the roadway, bursting into flames. The airfield is about three miles northwest of Cotter and about four miles southeast of Bull Shoals Dam.

The sheriff said the Federal Aviation Administration is sending investigators to the scene.
