School Funding Case Hinges on Session Work

LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says much of the discussion with special masters overseeing the Lake View school funding case has focused on the Legislature's action this year. That's despite a declaration by the state Supreme Court when they reappointed the masters that they had no intention of monitoring the 2007 Legislature.

The declaration did not appear to stop masters Bradley Jesson and David Newbern as they completed their review of the state's attempts to provide an adequate education to its 450,000 students.

In a hearing last week and one in February, Jesson and Newbern focused primarily on the Legislature's attempts to resolve the long-running Lake View case. But rather than look at the 2006 special session called last year to address Lake View, the masters focused on the bills passed during the 86-day regular session that ended this month.

The state had said at first that Arkansas' school funding efforts should be judged based on last year's actions. But lawyers for McDaniel's office backed away from that assertion as school districts said they were pleased with the direction of the session just completed.
