MEMPHIS, TN - All 229 buses in the Memphis Area Transit Authority fleet will shift to a biodiesel fuel blend beginning next month.
The plan is intended to help curb smog. The city remains in violation of air-quality standards for ozone pollution.
Biodiesel was tested in some transit authority vehicles last year. It generally produces lower emissions of hazardous air pollutants and soot particles than conventional diesel.
This summer, the Transit Authority also is scheduled to receive four even cleaner diesel-electric hybrid buses. They run on a combination of diesel power and electricity stored in batteries.
