How Available are Hybrids and Alternative Fuel Vehicles in Region 8?

JONESBORO, AR -- Over the past year, more and more emphasis has been put on ''going green'' in every aspect of life including the way you drive.

With the development locally of many alternative fuels it's getting easier and easier to be green.    In the past year the sale of hybrid and alternative fuel cars was up by 20%.

Dave McCrosky and his wife bought a hybrid Toyota Camry in February of 2007.

"I just think its a great deal, especially with gas going up," said McCrosky.

"We have a lot of people come and ask about the hybrid.  They're really curious about how it works," said Toyota salesman Marty Williford.

"Especially since the gas prices started climbing again we're getting more and more interest in it," said Barry Weyer.

Dealers say there's not really that much difference in the cost to buy a hybrid.  It can range anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 more to buy the hybrid car.

"You're looking at a car that you can fill up for $25-$26 and go 400 miles on a tank of gas," said Weyer.

While you will save money on gas millage with your hybrid you really need to own that vehicle for five or six years to really see a good return on your money.

There are many of the newer cars and trucks being developed that do use flex fuels like ethanol. Those fuels are available right here in Region 8.

Last year in Arkansas, there were 55,000 flex fuel vehicles that were sold.  Those can run on standard gasoline or ethanol.  There were also over 1,300 gasoline or electric vehicles sold in 2006.
