Missouri High Schools Vote Down Separate Championships

COLUMBIA, MO - State high school officials defeated a proposal to create separate athletic championships for public and private schools.

Belle High in Maries County petitioned to establish separate championships.  A spokesman for the Missouri State High School Activities Association says the petition received less than 23 percent of 413 votes.

The petition was a response to a perceived imbalance between smaller high schools in rural areas and private schools.  The private schools can offer need-based scholarships and attract students from broader geographic areas.

Spokesman Rich Kindhart says the activities association continues to explore ways to even the playing field.  A statewide task force has made several reform proposals.
