Psychiatric Examination Ordered for 13-Year-Old Accused of Killing Dexter Man

DEXTER, MO - A recent court order in the case of a 13-year-old accused of shooting and killing a Dexter man upholds a previous order for a pre-trial psychiatric examination.  The seven-page filing was released Tuesday as the result of an April 23 hearing in regards to the original order.

Owen Welty, 13, is accused in the November 2006 shooting death of 64-year-old Don McCollough on his farm near Bloomfield.  Welty is charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action, and if convicted, could face life in prison.

A date for the examination has not yet been scheduled.
