PARAGOULD, AR - A group that hopes to keep the Delaplaine school open has launched a petition drive to force the Greene County Tech School District to have a public meeting with them.
Delaplaine Community Action needs to gather 50 signatures to force a meeting with the school board.
The Greene County Tech School Board voted last year to close the Delaplaine campus. The school has 245 students, and is to close at the end of this school year. But school supporters filed a lawsuit last month seeking an injunction against closing the Delaplaine School.
The group is trying to keep Delaplaine open for one more year. After that, the group hopes to obtain charter school status, beginning in the 2008-2009 school year.
Under a state law passed amid a variety of school reforms in 2003 and 2004, districts with fewer than 350 students must merge with another.
